CriticalMass is MassCEC's growth-stage Tech-to-Market program providing up to $1,000,000 in grant funding, specialized services, and partner matchmaking to startup applicants with strong track records of early-stage commercialization and successful demonstration projects. The program supports startup-led commercial deployment projects that address decarbonization challenges within MassCEC's four focus areas and help grow Massachusetts' clean energy economy. Successful applicants must propose commercial deployment projects with Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8 or higher, demonstrating at least one successful pilot project in an operational environment prior to application. Projects must include a Massachusetts-based project site with majority of work completed at that site. The program expects to award 3 projects in this round from a total funding pool of $3,000,000 ($1,000,000 maximum per award). Awardees must contribute 25% cost-share (80% can be in-kind, 20% must be cash). Projects are approximately three years in duration with deployment beginning by September 2026. MassCEC will also receive warrant coverage of 10% of the grant amount (7-year term) based on the company's most recent equity financing or 409A valuation. Funding can be used for capital equipment, labor, materials, and working capital, but not overhead costs. Milestone-based fund dispersal will be determined during contracting phase. Lead applicant must own the proprietary climatetech technology.
