Long Duration Energy Storage

The City of Pasadena is seeking information on Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies with at least 10 hours of storage capacity to support its goal of achieving carbon-free electricity. This Request for Information (RFI) aims to gather insights from industry experts, academia, research laboratories, and government agencies about existing and evolving LDES technologies that could enhance grid reliability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources.

The proposed site for future LDES development is a decommissioned steam plant covering approximately 7 acres, which is scheduled for demolition in the coming years. The City is particularly focused on identifying LDES solutions that could be commercially available in the 2027-2030 timeframe and evaluating how much of these technologies can be accommodated within the designated site. The RFI also welcomes insights into solutions that may be available after this timeframe.

Respondents should provide detailed information addressing the metrics outlined in the Matrix of Metrics attachment, which includes technical specifications, performance characteristics, cost estimates, and feasibility assessments for proposed LDES technologies. Responses should clearly indicate the technology type, commercial availability timeline, capacity and duration specifications, efficiency ratings, environmental considerations, and site compatibility with the approximately 7-acre decommissioned steam plant location in Pasadena, California.

Participation in this RFI will not positively or negatively impact the City's consideration of any future procurements related to LDES efforts. All information submitted in response to this RFI is considered public information. The Q&A deadline is December 21, 2024, and responses are due by December 31, 2024 at 10:00 PM Pacific Time.
