New Mexico Opens Grid Modernization RFI to Support 100% Clean Energy Transition
Proposal Alert Spotlight
New Mexico Request for Information to Leverage Federal Funding Programs for Clean Energy Projects
New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD)
New Mexico is making a significant push toward its ambitious 100% zero-carbon electricity goal with a new Request for Information from the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD). This RFI represents a strategic opportunity for eligible government entities to secure funding for grid modernization projects that will be critical to the state's clean energy infrastructure transformation.
What makes this opportunity particularly noteworthy is its comprehensive scope and flexible structure. The program welcomes three distinct project types: original research initiatives advancing grid understanding (Type 1), pre-construction and design activities (Type 2), and full construction and installation projects (Type 3). This range allows organizations at different stages of development to participate, whether they're conducting preliminary research or ready to break ground on major infrastructure upgrades. Notably, ECAM may fund multiple project types from a single entity, providing potential for larger, more integrated proposals.
This RFI is ideal for a diverse range of public sector applicants including municipalities, county governments, state agencies, universities, public schools, post-secondary institutions, and Indian nations, tribes, and pueblos located within New Mexico. Energy professionals working with these entities should pay close attention, particularly those specializing in renewable energy integration, grid reliability and security, demand response systems, and energy efficiency initiatives. With applications accepted on a monthly rolling basis starting November 1, 2025, this represents an ongoing opportunity rather than a one-time deadline, allowing organizations time to develop compelling proposals that align with New Mexico's clean energy vision.
