Maine's $IRA-Funded Heat Pump Rebates for Affordable Housing - Deadline June 2028
Proposal Alert Spotlight
Initiative for Electrification in New Affordable Multifamily Housing
Efficiency Maine Trust
This week's spotlight features a significant opportunity for HVAC contractors, heat pump installers, and affordable housing developers working in Maine. The Efficiency Maine Trust is offering substantial rebates through their Initiative for Electrification in New Affordable Multifamily Housing, backed by federal Inflation Reduction Act funding. With a June 30, 2028 deadline, this program provides ample time for planning and project development.
The Efficiency Maine Trust, the state's independent administrator for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, is targeting new construction projects that serve low-income communities. This initiative specifically supports buildings with 18 or more dwelling units where at least 50% of units are reserved for low-income households, including Public Housing Authority properties, Section 8 buildings, and Low Income Housing Tax Credit developments.
Energy professionals specializing in commercial-grade heat pump systems should take note of the eligible equipment categories: mini-split heat pumps, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems, heat pump rooftop units, and single package heat pumps with through-the-wall outdoor air ducting. This RFP represents an excellent opportunity for companies with experience in multifamily electrification projects to contribute to Maine's clean energy goals while serving communities that benefit most from reduced energy costs. Developers and contractors already working in the affordable housing sector will find this program particularly valuable for enhancing project feasibility and meeting sustainability requirements.
